Another epic race, involving loosing many places on the first lap, and fighting back through. It was made alot more ‘interesting’ by a dump of oil at the apex of druids….
I was so so anxious before qualifying. I though I had forgotten to drive since my last race, and I had never driven the GP circuit. We set the car to veer toward understeer so that I felt a bit more comfortable attacking the fast corners on the long circuit.
Driving turned out to be fine, and I was improving by at least a second per lap during the 15 minutes I had to set a time (8 laps). My best lap was 1:52.87. I felt I could find an extra 1.5 seconds quite easily, but any more would be tough.
That put me 15th on the grid – 1st in class B, 6th out of the cars running on road legal tyres.
The last racing start I made was rubbish because I was concentrating on too much at once. I left this one to instinct and it managed to pay off. You need to hold the handbrake at brands because the grid is on a slope.
i was always going to play the first lap cautiously, but I didnt expect to loose as many places. The leader’s engine went pop on the way up to druids dumping oil on the apex. Somehow I managed to catch the slides one-handed. I lost more places by bogging down out of Surtees and not changing down a gear! Bugger. By this point my competitors must have been 15 seconds in front.
Lots of people span in front of me, and I managed to pick through and win my class and finish around 6th from the non-slick runners (4th fastest time).
So happy to have a good race and bring the car back in one piece!!!!
These videos explain how it happened!….
